Storytelling
- Think ‘YES, AND…’ to all ideas – yours and
your friend’s. - LISTEN carefully to everything the other player says, and build on it – don’t cancel, contradict or ignore.
- Keep the story moving FORWARD – don’t let the characters waste time ‘thinking’, ‘deciding’
or backtracking. - Have your characters get EMOTIONAL. If your friend hints at an emotion, make it bigger! Characters should ACT on their emotions.
- Be brave and NAME objects, places, emotions – avoid talking vaguely about ‘it’ or ‘the thing’.
- Establish
a POINT OF VIEW and stick to it (e.g. ‘I was walking along the beach’
versus ‘Henry the Albatross was walking along the beach’).
- Establish a TENSE and stick to it (e.g. ‘I’m walking along the beach’ versus ‘I was walking along
the beach’). - If it helps, START with ‘Once upon a time’ or ‘A funny thing happened to me on my way to…’
Game-playing:
- Feel free to use a different FORMS of a word (e.g. ‘walk’, ‘walked’, ‘walking’).
- Set
TRAPS for each other using the centre line. Finish your turn
mid-sentence, give the character a funny voice that your friend will
have to continue, suggest that the character is about to burst into
song, put the character in mortal danger so your friend hs to get them
out.
- If someone makes a mistake, KEEP GOING – save the story, if you can.
- You
don’t have to wait for the time to run out. If you’ve reached an ending
you like – or if the narrative’s hopelessly tangled – END this story
and start another one. Stories are disposable, and they never run out!
It’s your story,
anything can happen!
